Empowering Students via Autoethnography Assignment: Fostering Inclusive Communities for Gender and Sexuality in Social Inequality Class

Discrimination is still a prominent and widely faced issue on college campuses across the United States, especially regarding gender sexuality. In this research, we utilized autoethnography as pedagogical methodology to illustrate understand students’ experiences in environment, such feelings of invisibility, isolation, being unsafe, danger, unaccepted. This study explores use improve campus environments analyzes perception changes within they relate Data were collected from 146 students SOC 3010 Social Inequality Fall 2019 Spring 2020 courses at Utah State University. Participants asked write term paper which provided topics included gender, sexuality, religion, race, mental health. We used content analysis evaluate submissions, themes exposure people different genders, limited perspective, learning about others' experiences, having someone important life that belongs LGBTQIA+ community". finds positive change perspective sexuality when autoethnographies are employed classroom.
